Tom just graduated from high school. He was nervous about what to do next. He hadn't applied to any schools, he didn't have a job yet, he didn't want to go into the army, and his mom was on his back about his laziness every day! Even though he would rather stay at home and play video games online, Tom knew that he was about to enter the real world and needed to start thinking about what he was going to do with his life.

The next time his mother came into his room to yell at him about not doing anything with his life, Tom told her that hewas interested in getting into the field of website development as a career, but didn't know where to start! He had grown up using the internet and was knew that money could be made in cyberspace, but he had no formal experience or training. Tom decided that the best way to figure out how to get into website development was to talk to some people who were already in the profession, but where would he find them? Since he already knew that website developers spend a lot of time online, he thought he would start there. He serached the internet for achat room about website development and found a great community of people discussing the issue. At first, Tom didn't have anything to contribute to the conversation but after listening in about all of the different trends, he started to understand the work and began asking educated questions. Suddenly, he was bombarded with feedback about website development. The people in the chatroom gave him all kinds of good advice about what kind of classes to take, where to start, and how to begin his new career.

It took a long time for Tom to feel confident about his skills as a website developer, but thanks to the good advice he got from the chat room he found and some independent research, he was able to complete some classes and get a freelance job building a home page for a new non-profit company in his neighborhood. Tom really enjoyed his first job anddecided that this was really what he wanted to do.He followed through on all the advice he had gotten when he first decided on website development and he eventually graduated from a technical college and has a great new job.
