My grandmother wanted to learn about how to use a computer. She did not have any knowledge when it came to the Internet. I started by helping her purchase high speed Internet through Verizon Wireless. I didn't want her to experience a very slow connection because this might have discouraged her from wanting to use the Internet.

My grandmother and I live several hours away, and if I could help her learn the basics of how to use the Internet, then maybe we could communicate more.

After teaching her how to connect to the Internet, I showed her what a browser was and how it functioned. She was amazed at the search results that would show up when she typed in an area of interest! I showed her the Google browser first, because that browser just so happened to be my favorite! But, my grandmother really liked the Yahoo browser better, so we set up that browser as her home page.

My grandmother used to love to shop, but after getting older, she has a hard time getting around. Therefore, I showed her that buying on-line could be an alternative to going to a store. The products would be shipped to her house! She was really impressed with all of this information and seemed to catch on rather quickly! She told me she wanted her own website! I was a little worried because this could be very confusing to someone who did not know much about the Internet. She persisted on knowing how, so first I told her she needed to buy an original domain. "Domain?"she asked, with a puzzled look on her face. I told her that a domain was simply the name of the website. I then told her after she got a domain that she would need to purchase hosting for her site. I explained what hosting was, and that she also would need to create a website. She was clueless, so we hired some web developers to assist with my grandmother's website. I asked her what type of site did she want, and she proclaimed that she wanted a site for buy on-line products. I told her that she could sell products on E-Bay, but she insisted that she have her own site!

Today my grandmother has a developed a million dollar buying on-line site for older people. The person gets a discount if they are older and disabled. She also participates in buying on-line bulk products to supply her site with merchandise. I am amazed that a lady from the 1900's is just exploding a company on the Internet. Who says that old people can't learn how to use today's technology!
